ISCC Announces New Canada CFR Certification

On June 10, 2025, the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) announced that they had partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to create a new feedstock certification scheme that will significantly streamline traceability requirements for low carbon fuels producers selling into the Canadian market under the Clean Fuels Regulation (CFR).  The new ISCC Canada CFR certification will allow for feedstock producers to become certified by ISCC as compliant with the Canada CFR program.  As this is an offshoot of the ISCC PLUS program, currently certified ISCC PLUS and ISCC EU feedstock producers will find their Canada CFR documentation and verification requirements significantly reduced.  This certification would also give low carbon fuels producers the option to use ISCC as a 3rd party certification, rather than relying on feedstock producer self-declarations, as was previously required by ECCC.

In the released guidance document, ISCC outlines the sustainability criteria for agricultural feedstocks as well as clear requirements for self and sustainability declarations under the program and specific provisions for verifiers.

At TRICORD, we closely monitor the progression of all low carbon fuels regulations, including the Canada CFR, and have been keeping up with the latest news.  We have experience calculating facility CI values using the OpenLCA model, among others, and have helped low carbon fuels producers to navigate this ever-changing landscape.
