{"id":1539,"date":"2020-11-20T14:35:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T14:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tricordconsulting.com\/?p=1539"},"modified":"2021-04-21T15:23:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T15:23:49","slug":"epa-pm2-5-and-o3-draft-modeling-guidance-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tricordconsulting.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/20\/epa-pm2-5-and-o3-draft-modeling-guidance-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA PM2.5 and O3 Draft Modeling Guidance Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On February 10,\n2020, the U.S.EPA published draft guidance providing updates to the previous <em>Guidance\nfor PM2.5 Permit Modeling<\/em> to\nreflect the 2017 revisions to the 40 CFR part 51, Appendix W <em>Guideline\non Air Quality Models <\/em>and\nincorporate appropriate sections for ozone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Spoiler Alert] There\ndoes not appear to be any unexpected or considerable changes at this time.&nbsp; The draft guidance seems to be consistent\nwith methodologies we are already employing in our active air quality analyses\nand appears to simply consolidate recommendations from the past several years.&nbsp; However, with that said, this guidance does warrant\nspecial consideration when conducting PM2.5 and ozone air quality analyses as\nit will likely supersede prior guidance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S.EPA\u2019s\nefforts since 2016 focused on updating the 2014 Guidance for PM2.5 Permit\nModeling to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>incorporate\nozone; <\/li><li>update\naspects of the PM2.5 increment section; <\/li><li>reflect\nthe 2017 Appendix W Guideline revisions and 2018 \u201cSILs Guidance;\u201d and<\/li><li>revise\nbased on ongoing feedback and knowledge gained from practical application in\ncompliance demonstrations.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Per recent communication with U.S.EPA\u2019s\nmodeling group, they are in the process of briefing senior management on\nrevisions from stakeholder comments.&nbsp; The\nU.S.EPA is still planning a late 2020 or early 2021 release for the final\nguidance document.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the guidance is not final, the agency is recommending that permit applicants proceed with following the recommendations of the draft guidance.&nbsp; Additionally, it is appropriate for applicants to develop modeling protocols for review with their respective permit reviewing authorities on all permitting projects involving ozone and fine particulate to ensure that there are no issues in the approach for the compliance demonstration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TRICORD is available to assist you with any modeling needs.
